CAS 2149581-44-0 | Polymerizable Benzophenone Photoinitiator Monomer, Low Migration & Low Odor, Preferred Choice for High-End UV Curing

2026-09-20 Shanghai Massive Chemical

CAS 2149581-44-0, Chemical Name: 2-[2-(4-benzoylphenoxy)ethoxy]ethyl methacrylate, is a polymerizable benzophenone Type II photoinitiator bearing reactive methacrylate double bonds. It is developed to address industry pain points of conventional small-molecule benzophenones, such as easy migration, blooming, strong odor of finished products and high extractable residues, and is widely applied in UV curing systems with strict migration control requirements.

Core Product Mechanism

The molecule contains both benzophenone photosensitive moiety and polymerizable methacrylate double bond. Under UV irradiation, it generates active free radicals to initiate resin polymerization with the synergy of co-initiating amine. During curing, the acrylic double bond on the molecule participates in crosslinking reaction and covalently anchors into the cured film network, instead of existing as free small molecules. It inhibits the migration of photoinitiator and its degradation products to the coating surface and contact substrate at the molecular structure level, greatly reducing extractable residues of finished goods.

Key Performance Advantages

1.Ultra-low migration and blooming: Different from common benzophenone BP, it is bonded into the polymer network after curing. The film hardly suffers from blooming or precipitation, meeting high residue control scenarios including food contact materials, pharmaceutical packaging and sensitive electronic components.

2.Excellent surface curing performance: It inherits the strong surface-drying capability of benzophenone photoinitiators and shows better tolerance to oxygen inhibition. Thin coating systems are less prone to tackiness, suitable for thin-layer inks, protective films and clear coats.

3.Low odor property: Low content of free small molecules after curing, almost no residual odor in finished products, improving workshop production environment and sensory experience of end products.

4.Good resin compatibility: The flexible ether link segments in the molecule deliver favorable compatibility with various acrylate monomers and oligomers, with low tendency of delamination or turbidity for easy formulation.

5.High formulation flexibility: As a Type II photoinitiator, it efficiently initiates photopolymerization when blended with a small amount of tertiary amine co-initiator. It can be used alone or compounded with other photoinitiators to adjust curing speed and film properties.

Main Application Fields

✅ Food packaging UV inks and laminating clear coats

✅ Flexible electronic UV coatings, optical protective films, UV adhesives for PET/PC substrates

✅ Medical-grade UV coatings, surface curing coatings for disposable consumables

✅ High-grade printing and label UV overprint varnishes

✅ UV curing coatings for cosmetic packaging and children’s articles

✅ All kinds of UV resin systems with compliance requirements on migration, extraction and odor

Usage Notes

This product is a Type II photoinitiator, recommended to be used with amine co-initiators. The dosage shall be adjusted according to film thickness, UV light intensity and substrate type, with a normal addition range of 1%–5%. Store in dark, sealed and ambient conditions, avoid high temperature and UV illumination to prevent premature self-polymerization. We can supply small-batch samples for formulation evaluation. COA certificates are available for each batch, stable mass supply is supported. We can assist customers in formulation testing and compliance document coordination. R&D manufacturers of UV inks, coatings and optical materials are welcome to inquire for samples.
