2-Hydroxy-4-acryloyloxybenzophenone|CAS: 15419-94-0

English Name: 2-Hydroxy-4-acryloyloxybenzophenone (4-Benzoyl-3-hydroxyphenyl Acrylate)

Molecular Formula: C16H12O4

Molecular Weight: 268.26

Product Overview

CAS 15419-94-0 is a reactive benzophenone-type UV absorbing functional monomer. Its molecular structure integrates an o-hydroxybenzophenone UV-absorbing core and a polymerizable acryloyl double bond. Unlike conventional small-molecule UV absorbers, it can directly participate in copolymerization in UV-curable and thermosetting systems and be anchored into the resin network via chemical bonds. It fundamentally addresses the common drawbacks of ordinary UV absorbers such as easy migration, precipitation, volatilization and poor extraction resistance. It is a preferred anti-yellowing and weather-resistant monomer for high-end weather-resistant UV-curable systems, functional coatings, photovoltaic encapsulant films and special adhesives.

Core Structure and Mechanism

The o-hydroxybenzophenone moiety rapidly captures ultraviolet light in the range of 280–360 nm through intramolecular hydrogen bonding and converts harmful UV energy into harmless heat. It suppresses UV-induced resin chain scission, oxidative degradation, coating chalking and substrate yellowing. The side-chain acrylate double bond enables free-radical copolymerization with acrylate, epoxy acrylate, polyurethane acrylate and other matrix resins. It is permanently bonded into the polymer backbone without free migration or blooming, combining efficient UV shielding with integration into the resin matrix. It also exhibits weak photoinitiating activity and can assist in improving surface curing in certain UV-curable formulations.

Key Product Features

✅ Reactive bonding with zero migration and precipitation: The built-in acryloyl double bond participates in polymerization and will not leach out under solvents, rainwater or contact media, suitable for food-contact, photovoltaic and long-term outdoor weathering scenarios. ✅ High UV absorption efficiency: Excellent absorption for UVA and UVB bands, inhibiting substrate aging, coating gloss loss, discoloration and cracking.

✅ Excellent resin compatibility: Soluble in most acrylate monomers, oligomers and solvent-borne resins, and well dispersible in waterborne emulsion systems.

✅ Low volatility and good thermal stability: Compatible with UV curing and medium-low temperature baking processes, with minimal volatilization loss during processing.

✅ Strong formulation synergy: Can be compounded with HALS hindered amine light stabilizers and primary photoinitiators for synergistic long-term weather resistance and enhanced anti-aging performance.

✅ Broad applicable systems: Usable in solvent-based, waterborne, solvent-free UV-curable systems and emulsion polymerization systems.

Main Application Fields

1.UV-curable coatings: Wood varnishes, plastic UV topcoats, metal overprint varnishes, 3D printing photosensitive resins, inks, vacuum deposition protective coatings. Mitigates early yellowing of outdoor UV coatings and extends service life under sunlight and rain exposure.

2.New energy photovoltaic materials: EVA/POE photovoltaic encapsulant films, backsheet coatings and weather-resistant modified photovoltaic auxiliary materials. It blocks ultraviolet rays to protect solar cells and encapsulation layers and extend the service life of modules.

3.Adhesives and sealing materials: Acrylic structural adhesives, pressure-sensitive adhesives, optical adhesives and potting compounds. Prevents yellowing and adhesion degradation of adhesive layers under prolonged UV exposure.

4.Emulsion and waterborne systems: Silicone-acrylic emulsions, pure acrylic exterior latex paints, waterborne industrial coatings and textile coatings for outdoor construction and textile UV protection finishing.

5.Plastic and elastomer modification: Transparent plastics, optical sheets and film modification for high-end modified materials requiring UV resistance and no small-molecule additive precipitation.

6.Special optical and cosmetic intermediates: Applicable to the synthesis of functional sunscreen polymers (polymeric sunscreen monomers), suitable for low-irritation, free-small-molecule-free sunscreen formulation development. (Note: Final cosmetic products must comply with local regulatory review requirements.)

Typical Technical Specifications (Industrial Grade)

Purity (HPLC): ≥98.0% / ≥99.0% (high-purity grade optional)

Acid Value: Conforms to specification

Water Content: ≤0.3%

Polymerization Inhibitor: Appropriate amount of MEHQ (adjustable on request)

Solubility: Soluble in ethyl acetate, toluene, acetone, TPGDA, HDDA and other acrylate monomers; slightly soluble in water Storage Condition: Store sealed in cool, dry and dark conditions.

Storage under inert atmosphere below 15 ℃ is recommended. Keep away from light and air to prevent self-polymerization and deterioration.

Recommended Dosage Reference

General weather-resistant UV coatings and inks: 0.5–3.0 wt%; Photovoltaic encapsulant films and high weathering outdoor systems: 1.5–5.0 wt%. Gradient testing is recommended according to substrate thickness, UV exposure intensity and required weathering lifespan. Compounding with HALS delivers better performance.

Advantage Comparison vs. Conventional Small-Molecule Benzophenone UV Absorbers

Ordinary BP-type UV absorbers are only physically blended. They tend to migrate, precipitate and bloom over time and can be easily extracted by solvents. This product is a reactive UV absorbing monomer. After polymerization, it becomes part of the polymer chain, featuring superior migration resistance, solvent extraction resistance and long-term aging resistance. It is an ideal upgrade option for high-end weather-resistant formulations.
